Description: Learn how to install 3rd party plugins and filters so they show up under the Effects menu ready to be used to enhance your images.

My terms of use for this tutorial are simple....What you create using this tutorial is yours to do with as you please. A link back to this tut is appreciated but is not a requirement. The tutorial itself along with the images herein are copyrighted to me and all rights are reserved.

Before a plugin or filter can work in PhotoImpact, you will need to have downloaded and unzipped the msvcrt10.zip file. You will also need to have the plugin.dll file but as it belongs to Adobe, I cannot offer it for download here. However, you can get it by downloading a trial version of one of the Adobe products, it comes with several of their products. Plugin.dll files dated 7/6/98 and 6/30/99 both work.

Place the mscvrt10.dll into your Windows/System folder.
Place the plugin.dll into your main PhotoImpact folder, i.e., C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 8

Set up a folder on your computer hard-drive in which you will hold your downloaded plugins and filters. As you can see in the image on the left here, I have called my folder "filters and it's on my C: drive.
Open PhotoImpact and click on File/Preferences/General. When the Preferences window opens, click on the Plugins catagory and then click on the button with the three little dots on it. Browse to find the folder you set up on your hard-drive and then click on the OK button.

Close the PhotoImpact programme down and then re-open it. After you've opened a new image you should now see all your filters showing up under the Effects menu ready for use.

There are numerous places over the internet where filters can be downloaded for use in PhotoImpact. Some of those sites are listed on PIRC for your convenience.

Unfortunately, not all plugins and filters are compatible with PhotoImpact, so if you have problems with starting up the programme then I suggest taking them out of the folder on your hard-drive and putting them back in one at a time. Shut down and restart PhotoImpact each time you re-introduce a filter until you come across the incompatible culprit.
