Where Is It In PI

Part Two
We already looked at the basic layout of PI 7 in
the first part of this tutorial but I have included the basic layout
image here for quick reference should you require it.

In this second part of this tutorial we will
be taking a closer look at the Tool Panel, using the image on
the left here as a guide and giving a quick explaination of what
those tools are capable of. Almost all these tools will generate
the opening of a pop-up with even more options attributed to them
and you can also alter settings in the Attributes Toolbar. |
1. Pick Tool
This is probably the most used tool in PI. It's used to select objects,
text, masks, and literally any other thing in your compostion that
can be moved. This tool can also be used to move selections that haven't
been converted to an object.
2. Selection
Tool
A group of 4 tools that allow you to create and manipulate selections.
(Click on the little blue corner triangle to see the 4 tools, all
explained below).

Standard Selection Tool
This tool is used to create regular shape selections. There are
extra options in the Attributes Bar for this tool regarding Shape
and fixed size.
Lasso Tool
This is used to make selections of an irregular shape.
Magic Wand Tool
You can use this tool for the selection of areas in an image
based on the similarity of colour.
Bezier Curve Tool
Used to create make more curved selections.

3. Z-Merge Tool
A very powerful tool used to merge 2 or more 3D objects together.
4. Path Tool
A group of 4 tools that allow you to create paths or objects and manipulate
them. (Click on the little blue corner triangle to see the 4 tools,
all explained below).

Path Drawing Tool
Used to create filled path shapes
Outline Drawing Tool
Similar to the Path Drawing Tool, but this one will create outlines
only
Line & Arrow Tool
Used for the creation of a straight line or an arrow.
Path Edit Tool
You would need to use this tool if you wanted to edit the path
of a shape already created.

5. Text Tool
Used to create or edit text.
6. Crop Tool
Used to crop or trim an image.
7. Transform
Tool
This tool gives you the option to alter size, rotation or perspective
of your selected object.
8. RetouchTools
A group of 14 retouch tools essentially used in photo editing but
are used in other areas too. (Click on the little blue corner triangle
to see the 14 tools, all explained below).

Dodge
Used to lighten areas of an image.
Burn
Used to darken areas of an image.
Blur
Used to blur parts of an image.
Sharpen
Used to sharpen certain parts of an image.
Tonal Adjustment
To adjust tone of colours in an image, such as highlighting
and darkening.
Smudge
For smudging certain parts of an image. Great for fixing small
cracks and wrinkles in a photo.
Saturation
For adding more colour to certain parts of an image....good
on skin tones.
Warping
Used to distort parts of your image.
Bristle Smear
Used to smear areas of an image giving it an almost combed look.....this
is a tool I use a lot when digital painting.
Remove Red Eye
This tool can be used to remove red light (normally caused by
taking a flash photo at night) in your subject's eyes.
Remove Scratch
Used to remove scratches from a scanned image...photos normally.
Remove Noise
Removes noise such as background speckles from an image.
Colour Transform Pen
Literally replaces one colour in your image with another.
Colorize Pen.
With this tool, you can paint any kind of image with any hue
of a colour that you choose.

9. Paint Tools
A group of 12 paint tools. (Click on the little blue corner triangle
to see the 12 tools).

Not much explaination of these tools is required.
They do exactly as they say, which is to paint in differing modes
other than the color replacement pen which will allow you to replace
one colour in your image to that of another of your choosing. |
10. Stamp Tool
For the adding of a stamp (.ufo object), or group of stamps to your
image. PSP tubes can be imported to function at the click of this
tool too. Used in conjuction with Paint on Edges found in Effects
on the Menu Bar, gives this tool great capabilities.
11. Clone Tool
A group of 9 tools used for cloning an image. (Click on the little
blue corner triangle to see the 9 tools).

12. Eraser Tool
A group of 2 tools specifically for erasing. (Click on the little
blue corner triangle to see the 2 tools, both explained below).

Object Eraser
Used to erase parts of a selected object.
Magic Object Eraser
Used to erase areas of an object based on similarity of colour.

13. Fill Tool
A group of 4 tools specifically for filling an image. (Click on the
little blue corner triangle to see the 4 tools).
 |
Not much explaination is required for these tools.
The do exactly as they say, which is to fill an image with colour...used
in conjunction with gradient fills. |
14. Zoom Tool
Can be used to zoom in and out from your image.
15. Eyedropper
Tool
Used to select a certain colour.
16. Slicer Tool
Used for the purpose of slicing large images to use on a webpage.
The individual sliced images will be saved to a folder and the HTML
for them generated.
17. Image Mapping
Tool
Allows you to create areas with hyperlinks in your document without
the need to create objects first....essentially used in the creation
of a webpage.
Part 3 of this tutorial will give you a little information
as to what you can expect to find on the Access Panel including the
Easy Palette which is an essential and useful part of PI.
