Description: When you first open PhotoImpact 7
it can look so confusing and you wonder how you're ever going to get
your head around it all. This tutorial aims to show you the basic layout
of the programme to get you started.
My terms of use for this tutorial are simple....What
you create using this tutorial is yours to do with as you please. A

Part One
Let's start with the Menu Bar which is located right
across the top of your open programme.

FILE
New
You click to open a new image. It has many options and you can
dictate what size you'd like your image as well as what colour
you'd like the background to be.
Open
This will open your hard drive allowing you to browse to find
an image you'd like to open for the purpose of editing.
Visual Open
Very similar to Open.
Open from Web
Allows you to type in an url to import into PI a whole page as
a graphic.
Save
If working on a UFO, this will save your changes to that file.
Save As
Will allow you to save to your hard drive images or objects in
different formats.
Save For Web
Having sliced an image for use on a web page, you'd click on this
and then on "as HTML" Your images will be saved to a
folder along with the HTML you require for those images.
Preview in Browser
You can preview an image to see how it will look on a web page
by clicking here. This is a great way to check to see if your
tiles are seamless!
Print Preview
Shows you how your image will look on a printed page.
Print Multiple
Gives you the option to print multiples of the same image perhaps
for business cards, stickers etc.
Print
For the purpose of printing out your image.
Preferences
This is where you go to import plug-ins for effects. Also to set
which files PI will recognize to open and to save. Plus a host
of other things.
Recent Files
A quick way of opening files recently worked on and saved to your
hard drive.
Exit
To close PhotoImpact

EDIT
Undo Before
Allows you to backtrack with the image you're working on if you've
made a mistake. In preferences, under file, you can set it so
you have 99 undos.
Redo To
If you decide that you want to redo any of the undos before editing
the image you're working on any further, then you can click on
this.
Cut
Similar to delete.
Copy
Literally to copy an image to the clipboard.
Paste
To paste an image copied to the clipboard. You have a few options
here so be aware of which option you choose to use.
Crop
Used to crop to a selected area of an image.
Duplicate
With options to duplicate selected objects and/or base image,
or whole image.
Fill
Opens a box that gives many options for filling with colours,
gradients, textures or an image.
Rotate and Flip
Click on this if you need to reposition your image or object 90
degrees to the left or right, horizontally or vertically.
Edit Active Objects Only
Allows you to edit a selected object whilst a mask is placed over
objects or images to protect them.

VIEW
Actual View
Sometimes when opening a large image it will be in a smaller form
and look distorted, so to view your image at it's real full size
you'd need to click on this.
Zoom
An option to view your image either closer up or further away.
Full Screen
To view your image at full screen size. You'll find it useful
to know that when in full screen mode you'll need to press the
Esc key on your keyboard to get back to PI
Remove Menu Bar
Exactly as it says; to remove the menu bar, but should wish to
get your menu bar back, you will have to press the Esc key on
your keyboard.
Base Image
To hide or show your base image
Show Marquee
To show or hide the marquee or selection lines around objects.
Toolbars & Panels
Gives you the option to choose which toolbars and panels you want
on view.
Ruler
By clicking on this you will see a ruler added to the top and
left side of your image.

FORMAT
Auto Process
Edits pictures automatically, with brightness, contrast, colour,
and focus.
Style
Opens a whole array of options for editing your picture. All of
which can be found in the Easy Palette too.
Image Size
To alter the dimensions or size of your image.
Expand Canvas
Allows you to enlarge your canvas with a chosen colour and amount
of pixels
Frame & Shadow
Will open up a box which will give you many framing or shadow
options.
Windows Wallpaper
By clicking on this your image will be automatically saved and
used as either a tile or centred desktop wallpaper.

SELECTION
Many of these options are available when you right click on your
image too.
Border
Allows you to create a border on your image either inward, outward
or both.
Expand-Shrink
This will only work if you have something in selection mode, before
being converted to an object.
Convert to Object
To convert a selected area of an image to an object.
Preserve base
It's usually best to have this option checked to preserve the
state of your original image when converting any part of it to
an object.
Copy selection to Object Library
You can click on this to save an object in the easy palette.

OBJECT
Duplicate
Allows you to duplicate the selected object or image.
Merge
Allows you to merge just a selected object.
Merge All
Will do exactly as it says...merge all into one image.
Merge as Single Object (greyed out in my example)
Allows you to merge 2 or more selected objects to create a single
object.
Delete
To delete selected objects
Select All Objects
Allows you to select all objects on your canvas.
Convert Object Type
Allows you to convert an object to a different format.
Copy to Object Library
You can click on this to save an image in the easy palette.

EFFECTS
You will find many PI filters under the effects menu, but this
is where all those plug-ins you import, will show up too.

WEB
Component Designer
A PI feature. From banners, bullets, buttons, icons and separators.
All varied for great web designs...need to be downloaded via Smart
Download.
Background Designer
Allows you to create hundreds of seamless backgrounds.
Button Designer
Takes a flat surface and adds dimension to it.
Grid & Partition
Give you the option to create a grid on your canvas or image with
varying other options.
Shift Image
Allows you to scroll a merged image to check that it's seamless.
Image Optimizer
The best way to save your images as either jpg, gif, or png

The second part of this tutorial goes on to explain
the Tool Panel. If you found this first part interesting, then I can
