Color Replacement

You've come to this page because you want to know a little on how to alter the colour of something using the Format/Color Replacement, so I hope you find this mini-tutorial helpful.

Please note this mini-tutorial serves as a basic introduction to this particular PI feature, but hopefully gives enough information for you to get by with.

1

Before you start, ensure that you can clearly see the area of colour that you are wanting to change and if necessary, zoom in on your picture using the zoom tool. If you place your cursor anywhere over the right-hand preview window, your cursor will change to a hand. By clicking down on your left mouse button, you can grab your image and move it to a more favourable position if necessary.

Just as soon as you're ready, proceed with the following steps.

1. Ensure that there is a check mark in the preview box so that you can (if you want to) see how your original image is being affected.

2. Move the similarity slider near to the halfway position to start with. This can be changed later if necessary.

3. Activate the dropper tool by clicking on it.

4. Click on an area of colour that you'd like to change in the left-hand preview window.

5. Move the hue slider up or down the scale until you find a colour that you're happy with. The result will show in the right-hand preview window.

2

The following steps will show how to add to the area of colour that you'd like to change...

1. Click on the plus dropper tool to activate it.

2. Click on an area of colour that didn't alter when you used the ordinary dropper.

You need to do this last step as many times it takes to replace all the colour you're wanting to change. If nothing seems to be happening then increase the value of similarity a little.

If areas of your image are colouring that shouldn't, use the minus dropper on those areas to take the colour out. By doing that, you'll probably take some colour out of places you wanted altered too, so decrease the similarity a little and try again.

3

Once you're satisfied that you have an area selected that you wanted to alter the colour of, you can then play around with the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders just as I did for the eye of this creature on the left here.

As you can see in the image with the pink eye, some areas of the creature's skin turned slightly pink too. Had I noticed that before saving, I would have decreased the similarity a little more or reduced the saturation slightly to solve the problem.
